97% of People Can’t Differentiate Between AI-Generated and Human-Made Music — New Study Reveals

A recent global survey by Deezer and research firm Ipsos reveals a startling finding: 97% of listeners couldn’t reliably tell the difference between AI-generated music and human-made tracks in a blind listening test.

Study Setup: The AI vs Human Listening Test

  • The survey polled 9,000 people across eight countries (including US, UK, France, Germany, Brazil, Japan, Canada and Netherlands).
  • Participants were given three tracks — two fully AI-generated and one human-made — and asked to guess which were AI. 97% failed to correctly identify the AI tracks under those conditions.
  • Results shook many listeners: 71% said they were surprised, and 52% admitted feeling “uncomfortable” about not being able to distinguish human vs AI music.

What the Results Say: Listening, Trust & Transparency

The study makes clear how blurred the lines now are between synthetic and human-made music. But it also reveals widespread concern — and a demand for transparency:

  • 80% of respondents said fully AI-generated music should be clearly labelled for listeners.
  • Many expressed broader worries about the impact of AI on music quality, creativity, and artists’ livelihoods.

What This Means for Artists, Producers & Music Platforms

  • Flood of AI content: With AI tools becoming more powerful and accessible, more music — human-made and AI — is hitting streaming platforms. Keeping track of what’s real matters.
  • Need for identity & originality: As AI-made tracks saturate feeds, the value of unique voice, creative vision, and authentic talent is growing.
  • Transparency is key: Artists, platforms, and listeners alike may demand clarity on what’s AI and what’s human — a shift that could reshape how music is released and monetized.
  • Good reason to own & organize your catalog: If you’re an indie artist or producer, now’s a smart time to archive your stems, originals, metadata — to keep control and clarity around your art (and rights).
